Tassajara Hills Foundation

Foundation Staff 20-21

January 11, 2021

Dear Tassajara Hills Elementary Family,

On behalf of the Tassajara Hills Foundation board, I’d like to wish you a very Happy New Year after a most challenging 2020!

This is a difficult letter to write; it’s long but we all have a vested interest so please read to the end. I’ve been a proud member of the Tassajara Hills Elementary (T.H.E) community for six years and with good reason; despite being the second lowest-funded school district (by comparable size) in California, we’ve been able to maintain an exceptionally high level of education at T.H.E. This is due to our incredible teachers and staff and also because of years of family contributions (big and small) to our school Foundation, a non-profit funded and led by parent volunteers, like you and me, that funds critical staff and resources for which our state government simply does not provide.

But due to our inability to hold fundraising events in this pandemic year, we are only slightly over halfway to our goal of $225,000, which means many of these staff positions are at risk of being cut or reduced for the 2021-22 school year. This will have a direct impact on the education our children receive at T.H.E.

Here is the stark reality of the situation we are currently facing, and how your per-student donations impact our school:

  • In the past, the Foundation raised upwards of $350,000 annually to pay for: 7 paraeducators working side-by-side with our teachers, 1 reading specialist and 3 reading instructional assistants, 12.5 additional librarian hours per week, a part-time office assistant, technology and computer equipment, and a credentialed vocal music teacher.

  • In Spring 2020, the pandemic forced us to move our largest fundraiser, the Auction, online and to cancel the Healthy Hawk Hustle. These were significant losses and coupled with insufficient registration donations, we fell short of our fundraising goals for this current school year. As a result, we had to cut both our Credentialed Reading Specialist and Vocal Music Instructor.

  • Our revised fundraising goal for this year is $225,000, which would allow us to keep 7 paraeducators, 3 reading instructional assistants, 12.5 additional librarian hours per week, and 1 part-time office assistant, in addition to covering annual administrative/operating fees and begin replenishment of reserves depleted to pay for 2020-2021 salaries. Unfortunately, we are currently short $93,460 of that goal with only 40% of families having donated.

  • Some goods news: This $225,000 goal is achievable if every family contributes the per-student donation to our school (suggested amount of $650/student), and another $71,400 on top of that would enable us to bring back our cherished vocal music program.

  • But we only have until February 19th to make our final commitment to the District regarding the staff positions we will fund for next year.

  • Your voice matters: you will see a survey sent out from our Principal, Annabel Hurlburt on Friday, January 15th to help us understand your feelings on funding allocations.

Without in-person events like Winter Ball or Auction, we need to rely solely on annual registration donations for this school year. Hitting our fundraising goal means we’ll be able to keep this year’s staffing for next year. If not, our students will lose many of the resources which enable our school to deliver the exceptional educational experience we’ve all come to expect at Tassajara Hills.

Now is the time to rally. We don’t want families to be caught off-guard if staffing cuts need to take place due to a lack of parent donations. We know this has been a very challenging year for many, but please consider donating whatever amount you can toward the suggested $650 per student contribution.  Whatever you can give ($150, $300, $650, or more) will have an impact!  And you can still divide up your donation into monthly installments to make it easier.

As a fun incentive, for every $100 you donate by February 15th, your name will be automatically entered into a drawing for a pair of Disneyland Park Hopper Passes that are good through 12/31/21.

To donate, go to http://bit.ly/THEHawks or simply drop off a check made out to “Tassajara Hills Foundation” at the school office.

Thank you for joining us in this community effort.

Kind regards,

Tassajara Hills Foundation Store

The Foundation contributes to the school to provide the following benefits for our children:

  • Pays for three Reading Instructional Assistants to help assess all the children and assist those that need additional support
  • Pays for 7 Para Educators that are shared between all classrooms. This helps keep the Teacher-to-Student Ratio Lower! They will be able to facilitate small groups and 1:1 instruction even during remote learning.
  • Contributes to the Librarian hours to allow every class Library time.
  • Pays for part time Office Assistant to provide student health support and clerical assistance.

We believe, and guarantee, that EVERY child will benefit from THE Foundation donations.

We hope that EVERY family will donate! The suggested donation is a tax-deductible $650 per child per year ($1300 for two children).  The suggested per child amount will allow the Foundation to continue providing the listed staff.  We realize that not every family can afford this amount. We encourage every family to participate at the amount in which they feel comfortable. Every donation helps. However, If we do not meet our fundraising goals these positions that benefit every child will decrease in the future.
